Keto Meals When You’re Traveling
Meal Prep Containers Make Keto Traveling a Cinch
For starters…Get these meal prep containers to hold your keto meals on your travel days. They work well whether you are traveling by car or plane, are perfect for kids and adults, can be reused and hold a good amount of food. These containers are easy to rinse out and stack for storing when not in use. Condiment cups with lids are also useful for packing things like salad dressing, cream cheese and peanut butter or anything else you need contained. They also work great for portion control for things like nuts. I brought mine on our recent flight to Texas and had no problem getting it through airport security. Be sure to check with your specific airline to see what they allow you to bring on board with you.

Here are some ideas of things you can pack in these meal prep containers:
Pick your favorite meats and cheeses and create a keto snack platter that will rival anything the airlines are offering. In the photo above, I paired salami, brie and prosciutto wrapped mozzarella with some salted rosemary almonds. Delicious!
Other good options are:
- string cheese
- pepperoni
- laughing cow babybell cheese
- beef jerky
- hard boiled eggs
- berries
- homemade keto scones
- salad
- veggies
….or just throw in leftovers from last nights dinner! You can build a delicious chef salad with lettuce, cheese, ham, bacon, hard boiled egg and a ranch dressing packet. TIP: These are all great keto options for school lunches too.
Eating Keto at Your Hotel
Here are some suggestions for groceries to purchase if your hotel doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, or if you plan to eat in to save money. Assuming your room comes with at least mini fridge and a microwave, these items will allow you to make some quick and easy meals.
- Breakfast Bowls
- Veggies and dip
- Salad
- Meat and cheese plate
- Real Good Foods brand frozen meals are low in carbs and come in a variety of options from pizza to enchiladas and even breakfast sandwiches.
- Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork (pre-cooked) You can find this at most grocery stores in the refrigerated prepared meals section. Check the ingredients for added sugar. Costco has a keto approved option. At Trader Joes look for carnitas, Mexican style oven roasted pork.
- Open faced Cheezy sandwich using this Cheezy Cracker Recipe
- Pickle, cream cheese and ham roll ups
- Guacamole and dippers (cuccumber slices, pork rinds, cheese whisps or Cheezies)
- Rotisserie chicken
BBQ
If your hotel/resort has a bbq grill available, your options just increased significantly.
- Grilled steak, chicken or fish
- Burgers, hot dogs or brats without a bun
- Grilled veggies/kabobs
Misc
Other items you may need on your trip. Depending on how well stocked your room is, you may need to purchase a few extras
- Condiments such as mayo or mustard
- butter (for cooking eggs)
- cutlery
- paper plates/bowls
- knife/cutting board
- parchment paper (bring from home or purchase at the dollar store)
Great Breakfast Options:
If your hotel offers a free breakfast, cross your fingers and hope they include hot dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. Some hotels even offer a creat-your-own omelette station. This is the best case scenario, however, often times free breakfasts consist of nothing more than bagels, cereal, pastries, fruit and yogurt. These continental style breakfasts can be a nightmare for keto people. Sometimes you will find a hard boiled egg in the mix, but if eating hard boiled eggs first thing in the morning doesn’t appeal to you, here is a keto friendly breakfast you can whip up in your room:
** Even if you don’t feel like eating a hard boiled egg first thing, grab one anyway and keep it in your mini fridge for later.
Breakfast bowls – This Meat Lover’s Scramble is a life saver if you don’t have any good breakfast options. It can be made in the microwave and is only 2 grams of carbs per bowl. Eggs, meat and cheese…perfect in a pinch! We also use these if we have to leave right away. For example, if we are on a road trip and we need to check out early in the morning to make it to our next destination, these are perfect because you can heat them up and eat them in the car. Just make sure you have a plastic fork handy. Be sure to check the ingredients before purchasing. There are similar breakfast bowls that contain potatoes, so make sure to avoid those.
Along those same lines, these make ahead Breakfast Egg Muffins are easy to pack and heat up in seconds in the microwave. Perfect when your options are limited or when you are pressed for time.
Full Kitchen for the Win
When ever possible, we try to reserve a hotel room with a full kitchen. Just print out your favorite easy keto recpies, grab some groceries and cook away.
TIP: Something that I started doing that saved a big greasy mess was to purchase pre-cooked bacon crumbles (real bacon bits). You can just throw these on your eggs or salads without the mess of bacon grease splattering all over the stove. Who wants to clean up bacon grease on vacation?
One year we visited Disneyland over Christmas vacation. We stayed in a resort that had a full kitchen. As a result, I was able to make this fun keto breakfast for my family using a Mickey Mouse shaped pancake mold. Because this was a road trip, we didn’t have any restrictions to what we could bring. For instance, I packed some keto-pancake mix and monkfruit sweetened sugar free maple syrup along. On the other hand, if you are traveling by plane, you could throw some syrup into a TSA approved travel-sized container. (put it in a zipplock bag in case it leaks)
